Atelier 35 is an art space currently run by an artist collective including Alice Gancevici, Larisa Crunțeanu and Xandra Popescu. We share a common interest in socially and politically engaged projects, peripheral practices, collaboration and education.
The concept of Atelier 35 dates back to 1966, and was dedicated to experimental art. It functioned as an Artist´s Union outlet for experimental art. Number 35 suggests the conventional limit of youth. Throughout time, the Atelier 35 took different forms ranging from Artists Union branch to non-commercial gallery, literary circle and creative camp.
Alice Gancevici studied Photography and Video at the National Arts University of Bucharest. She works as an artist duo together with Remus Pușcariu and collaborates with Bucharest AiR, an artists residencies project encouraging international art production, research and cultural exchange in Romania. She lives and works in Amsterdam and Bucharest.
Larisa Crunțeanu has a background in Journalism and has studied Photography and Video at the National Arts University of Bucharest. She works as a performer, video-maker and sound collector. She lives and works in Bucharest.
Xandra Popescu has a background in Political Science and has studied Dramaturgy at National Film and Theatre University in Bucharest. She works as a writer and video-maker. She lives and works in Berlin and Bucharest.
In recent years, Atelier 35 was a site of intervention and collaboration for several individuals or teams.
